Research Interests:

Professor John Roddick is currently the SACITT Chair in Information Technology and Head of the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Flinders University. He joined Flinders in 2000 after 15 years at the Universities of South Australia and Tasmania. This followed 10 years experience in the computing industry as (progressively) a programmer, analyst, project leader and consultant.

Prof. Roddick's research specialises in the fields of:

  • Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery -- specifically in temporal and spatial data mining and as applied to medical and health data, and to defence and security;
  • Conceptual Modelling -- specifically in enhanced database systems semantics such as mesodata modelling, schema evolution and temporal (and to a more limited degree, spatial) systems design and use.

Publications and Qualifications:

PhD, La Trobe
MSc, Deakin University
BSc(Eng)(Hons), Imperial College, London

Prof. Roddick has published over 100 refereed papers in a number of areas of computing but predominantly in the areas outlined above.

Professional Interests:

Professor John Roddick is a fellow of the Australian Computer Society and of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. He is co-series editor of the Conferences in Research and Practice in Information Technology and was previously editor-in-chief of the Journal of Research and Practice in Information Technology.

He was the Chair of the Australasian Database Conference for 1998 and 1999 and co-chaired the conference in 2001 with Maria Orlowska. In 2000 he chaired (with Kathleen Hornsby) the International Workshop on Temporal, Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Data Mining - TSDM2000 - with PKDD2000 (proceedings available here). In 1999 he chaired the first International Workshop on Evolution and Change in Data Management (ECDM'99) and co-chaired the 2nd workshop with Fabio Grandi in 2002. He was General co-chair, with Jenny Harvey, of the Australasian Computer Science Week held in Adelaide in January 2003.

In 2004 he co-chaired, with Sven Hartmann, the 1st Asia-Pacific Conference on Conceptual Modelling and the 4th APCCM with Annika Hinze in January 2007. He was workshops chair for 25th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2006) (proceedings available here) and was involved with the ER'2007 conference in Auckland also.

More recently, he is the Oceania Regional Chair for to be held in Brisbane in April next year and will be PC Chair of the Australasian Data Mining Conference in Adelaide in November this year.

He is a participant of the international TimeCenter consortium of researchers investigating aspects of temporal database design and use, and co-chaired the Ninth International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases in Santorini, Greece in 2003 (proceedings available here).
